SCOTUS and the rise of a new Theocracy-Contrast Project Lounge Podcast- S3-Ep7

Show Notes:

What a busy news cycle we’ve had! Not just in the United States but around the globe. There’s been so much going on with the economy, the influences of the Ukrainian war, the SCOTUS and their decision with Roe v Wade, there’s just been a lot going on.

* SCOTUS: In a historic and far-reaching decision, the U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade on Friday, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.

* In doing so, it has effectively ended the constitutional right to an abortion for millions of US women.

* Individual states are now able to ban the procedure again.

* Half of the states in the US are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans.

* Thirteen have already passed so-called trigger laws that will automatically outlaw abortion following the Supreme Court’s ruling. A number of others are likely to pass new restrictions quickly.

* There are nine judges on the Supreme Court, six of whom were appointed by Republican presidents. ( President Trump appointed 3 )

** It should be noted that nearly ALL Pro-life advocates are ‘Christian Republicans’ and is estimated/likely they are also Trump supporters.

** Justice Thomas’ comments following the decision: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said landmark high court rulings that established gay rights and contraception rights should be reconsidered now that the federal right to abortion has been revoked. Thomas wrote that those rulings “were demonstrably erroneous decisions.” The cases he cited are Griswold vs. Connecticut, in which the Supreme Court said married couples have the right to obtain contraceptives; Lawerence v. Texas, which established the right to engage in private sexual acts; and Obergefell v. Hodges, which said there is a right to same-sex marriage.

* Theocracy and the looming parallels possible with the contents of the novel by Margaret Atwood, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

* The case has sent a shockwave of fear and anger across the country, as well as uncertainty of the future.

* Black women and other POC, and the disadvantaged population will suffer the greatest.

In The News:

* The war in Ukraine rages on.

* 50 people found dead in the back of a tractor trailer near our southern border.

* Closing thoughts: Be kind, take care of yourselves and each other.

Until next time, Peace.
