Barbara Colaciello teaches the art of improvisation, guiding students to discover their voices, tell their stories, create collaboratively, and grow as leaders. She is the founder and creative director of BABS’Lab, located at the CoRK Arts District in Jacksonville, Florida.
Multi-faceted artist Barbara Colaciello began her career working with Andy Warhol for six years at the Factory in NYC as the Advertising Director of Warhol’s magazine, Interview. For over two decades, Barbara has written, directed, produced, and performed socially engaged theater that contributes to vital conversations in the Jacksonville community.
For 9 years Barbara served as the Director of Education and Outreach for Players by the Sea Theatre, directing numerous plays and devised theater pieces. Barbara collaborated extensively with poet, playwright and nationally known NPR Radio Host, Al Letson, as his acting coach, director and producer of many of his plays. In 2018, Colaciello received a PNC Arts Alive Grant in partnership with the Florida Theatre to direct Letson’s anti-bullying play, Chalk, for Title 1 schools in Duval County.
Her studio, BABS’Lab, is a place for experimentation, training, and performance, a place where the community comes together to witness work that uplifts, breaks barriers, and crosses lines. Specializing in experiential and creative learning to enhance communication skills, the lab offers community members transformative experiences through storytelling events, classes, and workshops.
A 2013 TEDxJacksonville Speaker, Barbara was voted Best Actor by Folio Weekly’s 2016 Best of Jax readership.
* * She received a 2020 Art Ventures Individual Artist Grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Florida to write a new site-specific solo piece Open Heart (ed) premiering August 2021.
